The first time I truly understood the importance of nurturing your inner child was during a chapter of my life spent in Coral Bay—a tiny beachside settlement in north Western Australia. Tourists from all over the world visit Coral Bay to experience its stunning beaches and the underwater magic of the Ningaloo Reef.
One afternoon, after finishing my shift at the local grocery store and petrol station, I headed to the beach and met two lovely women from Europe. We sat under the shade and chatted, and the topic of ice cream came up—likely because I was craving one!
One of the women, Greta, shared that she was never allowed ice cream as a child. Her words carried a quiet sadness, and I could feel the weight of that neglect. I invited her to walk with me to the nearby café and asked her what flavour she liked. Her hesitation made me realise she didn’t feel she deserved it.
So I gently encouraged her to speak with her inner child. I bought her the biggest double scoop of Hokey Pokey ice cream (my favourite!)—one for her inner child, and one for mine.
Her face lit up with joy. As she licked her ice cream, she smiled and said, “My inner child thanks you very much!”
The next day, Greta came into the store to give me a gift—her voice. She was an opera singer, and right there in the middle of the shop, she sang her favourite song with breathtaking power. It was unforgettable.
But what stayed with me most was her radiant smile. Greta had understood something profound: it’s her responsibility now to create the life she would love. It’s not about the past—it’s about creating the future.
Your inner child will thank you too.
My Experience
I regularly call upon my five-year-old self and ask, “What would you love to do today?”
She inspires me to walk to the beach, spread my toes in the sand, jump in the waves, look for pictures in the clouds, and admire the beauty of trees. She wakes me in the night to look at the stars. She reminds me to play, to wonder, and to feel joy.
How to Call Upon Your Inner Child
All you need is your imagination. Hold your inner child’s hand and ask:
“What would you love to do today?”
Let your inner child guide you toward what feels nourishing, joyful, and safe.
What Does Your Inner Child Want?
- To feel safe?
- To feel loved?
- To have fun?
- To go play?
Listen deeply. Use your imagination to ensure your inner child feels safe, loved, and free to explore. This connection is vital for your emotional health and well-being.

I love to nourish my inner child, just like I would my very best friend.
Listen to Your Body Wisdom
Now I invite you to begin your own journey, guided by your body’s wisdom and the quiet voice of your Soul.
If you feel anger, fear, or judgment, notice the thoughts behind them. These thoughts may be holding you back.
